Palm Springs is a city in southern California, in the Coachella Valley in Riverside County. A verdant oasis in the desert, Palm Springs is a fashionable residential community and winter resort, renowned for its excellent golf courses. In the city are parts of Agua Caliente Indian Reservation, a junior college, as well as a botanical garden. In the area are Mount San Jacinto (3301 m/10,831 ft), ascended to some extent on the summit by an aerial tramway, and Joshua Tree National Park. Originally referred to as Agua Caliente (Spanish for "warm water"), the site was chosen in 1863 as a stop on the stagecoach line between New Mexico Territory and Los Angeles. It was created as a residential community in the 1880s. Palm Springs was incorporated as a city throughout 1938.
