Newark (New Jersey) is a city within northeastern New Jersey. The seat of Essex County, Newark is located on the Passaic River and Newark Bay, just west of New York City. The largest city in the state, Newark is a trade, insurance, financial, and transportation center. Although the city's industrial base has dropped in recent decades, firms engaged in producing chemicals, food products, and pharmaceuticals are located in the city. Two of the nations largest insurance companies also have headquarters in Newark.
Port Newark, on Newark Bay, is among the nation's largest ports for containerized cargo and is also a major unit of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. One of Newark's significant functions being a transportation center is the transfer of goods from cargo vessels to the several railroads and truck lines that serve the city. Within Newark is one of the largest truck terminals in the country, which functions as a transshipment point among long-distance and short-distance trucking operations.
Newark lies on major highways, such as the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway. In addition, the tunnels of the Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) line pass beneath the Hudson River and carry daily commuters bound for New York. Newark International Airport, one of many busiest in the country, is one of the three key airports around the New York City metropolitan area.
