Berkeley is a city proud of its architecture, and it's often a hotbed of controversy over preserving the past in favor of pressing into the future. Landmarks abound, from private homes, churches, and stores made by Julia Morgan and Bernard Maybeck during the early part of the century, to ivy-covered historical buildings within the University of California campus. There aren't any malls or even shopping centers in the modern sense of the word. Instead, Berkeley presents many neighborhood commercial districts with exceptional architecture constructed on a human scale. The Berkeley Historical Society leads frequent walking around neighborhoods to point out architectural delights along with their heritage.
