No guide to Newcastle would be complete without mentioning its most well-known monument, Hadrian’s Wall:
HADRIAN'S WALL is the most important monument established by the Romans in Britain. It is the best known frontier throughout the entire Roman Empire and stands as a reminder of past glories of one of the world's finest civilisations. Designated a World Heritage Site in 1987, Hadrian's Wall ranks alongside the Taj Mahal and other treasures of the great wonders of the world.
Spanning almost 2,000 years of history, dramatic and wild scenery, towns and cities, a visit to Hadrian's Wall is a must for everyone residing in or visiting the North of England. Forts, museums and events bring Roman history to life; walks lead you through magnificent countryside. Time spent exploring this unique Roman heritage in its ever changing setting will leave you with an unparalleled sense of awe and wonder.
Congratulations to the Countryside Agency - who this summer opened the newest National Trail in England, Hadrian's Wall Path. Hadrian's Wall Path is an 84-mile sign posted trail stretching from coast to coast through many of the most beautiful areas of England - from rolling fields and rugged moorland to the vibrant cities of Newcastle and Carlisle. The Path, with links to 40 short walks, is suited to people of all abilities and great for day visits, short breaks or perhaps a week-long holiday getaway.
