Cambridge (England) is a city and administrative center of Cambridgeshire, central England, on the Cam River. Cambridge is important as a center of learning and is also the seat of the University of Cambridge, amongst the wonderful educational institutions of Europe. It's also a market center for the encompassing agricultural region and it has research industries; the main manufactures consist of electronic equipment and precision instruments.
Cambridge has maintained most of its medieval appearance and has a number of outstanding edifices, such as the Church of Saint Bene't, a 10th-century Saxon structure; as well as the renewed Church of the Holy Sepulchre, one of several four round Norman churches in England. King's College Chapel (begun in 1446) is one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in Europe. The city has lots of parks and gardens and many museums and galleries, such as remarkable Fitzwilliam Museum. Cambridge and County Folk museums are right here.
Cambridge is host to an yearly arts event as well as a midsummer fair in existence since the early 16th century.
A Roman military outpost probably existed in the vicinity of present-day Cambridge. In Anglo-Saxon times trade between central England and continental Europe passed over the bridge over the Cam River here. Within the 12th century several religious orders established monasteries and affiliated schools in Cambridge; the university originated from these institutions in the 13th century. Cambridge received its first charter in 1207.
