Blackpool is a borough in Lancashire, northwestern England, to the Irish Sea. Blackpool is a major English vacation resort with an excellent sandy beachfront, an ice rink, golf courses, swimming pools, amusement areas, several piers, an aquarium, as well as a zoo. The seaside promenade (10 km/6 mi long) is covered with the Blackpool Tower (158 m/518 ft high), built in 1895, and modeled on Paris's Eiffel Tower. Blackpool became a resort during the 1780s and grew rapidly during the 19th century after the arrival of the railroad. Today it is a leading conference and convention center.
