Sukhothai was the first capital of Thailand established around 1238, and is also well-known for its extensive historical ruins, which following restoration is actually a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sukhothai's golden era was from the 13th to the 14th century, the art and also architecture created in this era are considered to be among the best in Asia. Sukhothai today includes the old and new towns (found 12kms apart from each other); most of the accommodation and all facilities being in the new town. The old town of Sukhothai consists mostly of the large Historical Park, where a lot of the remains of the original city can be viewed. The best way to explore the extensive historical site is on a bicycle that can be rented in the town.
