Gothenburg is a city in southwestern Sweden, around the Göta River, capital of Göteborg och Bohus County. Which has a generally ice-free harbor, Göteborg is the major port of Sweden. It is also the country's second largest city, after Stockholm. Göteborg is the site of the Volvo automobile-manufacturing plant; other industrial sectors include producing bearings, ship maintenance, brewing and distilling, sawmilling, cabinetmaking, and the processing of textiles, leather, and tobacco. The city is linked with the interior of the country by rail and by the Göta Canal, opened in 1832. The airport at Landvetter, nearly 20 km (about 12 mi) east of the city, serves both domestic and international airlines. The city is the site of the University of Göteborg (1891), the Chalmers University of Technology (1829), many schools; museums, and the Göteborg Opera House, which opened in 1994. The city was established in 1619 by King Gustav II Adolph, and its cathedral, the Gustavii Domkyrka, was built in 1633. It is famous for the Göteborg System, a plan of municipal licensing of liquor sales under which income is used for public projects.
