At last count there was something similar to 58 beaches around the island, however only a few are accessible by bus. Most need either a car, a 4x4, a cross-country motorbike, a stroll or perhaps many a boat.... During the summer the water temperature can get up to about 28 degrees, so there is no need for that "the waters too cold" excuse.
Also the myths with regards to jellyfish are unproven as you need to look a long way out before you encounter them and they are generally mostly harmless anyway.
It is definitely worthy of purchasing a snorkel though, as you only need to go a number of yards out in almost all of the secluded bays/beaches before you encounter a lot of fish etc, and if you fancy just a bit of getting back to nature there are a number of unofficial nudist beaches throughout the Island.
