The main islands of the group are Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Grand Canary (Gran Canaria), Lanzarote, La Palma and Gomera. The islands are of volcanic origin. Las Palmas, officially Las Palmas de Gran Canariais both a city and a port in the Canary Islands and capital of Las Palmas Province. Population (1991) 342,000. Santa Cruz de Tenerife is a city and port in the Canary Islands, on the coast of Tenerife being the largest of the Canaries and capital of Santa Cruz de Tenerife Province. Population (1991) 190,000.
