Tourist information - Shannon
Several great Irish adventures have their starting point at Shannon Airport, located in the heart of Ireland’s tourist region, just 15 miles from Limerick City and Ennis, and 56 miles away from Galway City. Shannon is a river, rising at the foot of the Cuilcagh Mountain in the northern part of the country, and flowing about 354 km towards the Atlantic Ocean between Loop Head and Kerry Head. The longest river in Ireland forms an estuary about 97 km long under Limerick, to which it is navigable by a chain of locks for vessels up to about 900 metric tons. North from Limerick, the Shannon is navigable for the majority of its length for small craft. Canals connect the river together with the Irish Sea at Dublin. A hydroelectric power station on the river is operating at Ardnacrusha, near Limerick. Ljao/jan/1v21
