Chalkida, attractively situated on the Euripos at its narrowest, is the capital (ca. 50,000 inhab.) of the district of Euboea and the seat of an archbishop. The town carries on an important trade in butter, livestock, and agricultural implements. Its industries include distilleries. It is the centre of bus communications of the island. Chalkida is about 80 km (50 miles) from Athens by bus or by train.
