Chalkida, exquisitely situated on the Euripos at its narrowest, is the capital (ca. 50,000 inhabitants) of the district of Euboea and the seat of an archbishop. The town carries on a major trade in butter, livestock, and furthermore agricultural implements. Its industries include distilleries. It's the centre of bus communications of the island. Chalkida is roughly 80 km (50 miles) from Athens by bus or by train.
