Tourist information - Freiberg
Freiberg certainly is the foremost free mining town in Germany and it is located approx. 30 km to the east of Chemnitz along the foot belonging to the Eastern Ore Mountains. Silver formed the roll-out of the town. Nowadays, the impressive patricians’ houses surrounding among the most beautiful trading markets in Germany still bear witness the town’s past glory. The oldest training mine, that is also offered to visitors, "Reiche Zeche", provides information about the silver deposits in the area. A must in the historic old city is St. Marien’s Cathedral, with its world-famous "Golden Gate” and art treasures, such as the tulip pulpit and probably by far the most melodious Silbermann organ on the globe. Gottfried Silbermann built up a brisk organ trade in and around the mining town. The oldest town theatre in the world is equally worth a visit. It is lovingly called the "Little Semper Opera ". Freiberg demonstrates its hospitality in the countless restaurants and lovingly-restored bars. The typical drink everywhere is Freiberger Beer.
